The Flag We Love by Pam Munoz Ryan
Symbol of ideals that are meant to last.
- the promise of our future
- a reminder of our past
The original red and white stripes were made of ribbonworks.
No one knows for sure who made the first stars and stripes.
Francis Hopkinson (one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence)
is considered by many to be the designer.
In the late 1800s James B. Uphan wanted children to show love for
their country by saving pennies to buy American flags for their
schools. Within a year they had saved enough to buy 1000s of
flags.
